    Neuropathy

Neuropathy, also referred to as peripheral neuropathy, indicates damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves of the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is a complex communication network composed of peripheral sensory, motor, and autonomic nerves that carry messages to and from the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to all other parts of the body.

Damaged or destroyed neurons, which manifest secondary to a variety of pathologies, disrupt this communication pathway resulting in neuropathy. There are several different types of peripheral neuropathies that have been identified that affect approximately 8-10% of the population. Neuropathy occurs in nearly half of people with diabetes.

Common symptoms associated with neuropathy are pain, numbness, weakness, and a loss of deep tendon reflexes. Instead of treating the symptoms, it is essential to address the underlying cause of neuropathy to help attenuate progression and possibly even reverse the condition altogether. Due to the increasing recognition of an association between metabolic syndrome and neuropathy, dietary and lifestyle interventions are foundational components in neuropathy management.

Peripheral Neuropathy refers to conditions that result when nerves carrying messages from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body are damaged or inflamed.

When these nerves are damaged, we can experience endless Burning 🔥, Numbness and Tingling, Chronic Pain 🤕 and even Loss of Balance.

👉 There are several kinds of Peripheral Neuropathies and they can stem from a variety of causes ranging from carpal tunnel syndrome (entrapment), traumatic injury (such as motor vehicle accidents, slip and fall, or sports/work related accidents), restricted blood flow, deteriorating joints, pesticide exposure, to toxic levels of sugar in the blood (causing nerve damage linked to diabetes).

In your Neuropathy Screening you will get answers to the following questions:

✅ What is the underlying cause of the nerve damage?
✅ How severe is my condition?
    ✅ Are other conditions contributing?
✅ What types of nerves have damage?
✅ How much treatment do nerves require to heal?

The underlying cause is different for every patient and must be understood in order to help the nerves heal and get us back to a normal life.

Thorough testing is so critically important in helping patients suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy and we here at Cornerstone Chiropractic want to help as many people as we can.

Our goal is to get our patients back to doing the things they love with the people they love without drugs, needles or surgery and in as painless a way as possible.

    What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition where nerves are damaged, which causes weakness, burning pain, numbness, tingling, and debilitating balance problems. The damage to the nerves can be caused by various problems in the body including poor blood flow to the nerves, toxic levels of sugar in the blood (diabetes), chronic infections, and exposure to pesticide exposure and genetic variants. The cause is different for every patient and it must be discovered in order to optimize the approach for healing.

    General symptoms of peripheral neuropathy:

    • Numbness
    • Tingling
    • Burning pain
    • Unusual and/or loss of sensation
    • Muscle weakness
    • Deep stabbing pain
    • Balance problems

Most cases of peripheral neuropathy are progressive, and symptoms can worsen if intervention is not taken. Symptoms of neuropathy can increase the risk of:

    • Falls
    • Wounds and infections which may lead to amputation in severe cases

Can Peripheral Nerves Heal?  Yes! It is well established in the scientific literature that peripheral nerves can and do heal.

To effectively heal nerve damage, a few factors must be determined:

    • What is the underlying cause of nerve damage?
    • How severe is the nerve damage?
    • What types of nerve fibers are damaged?
      • Sensory nerves (both small fiber nerves and large diameter nerves)
      • Motor nerves (that control movement of your muscles)

NOTE:  If a patient has been experiencing muscle weakness for more than two years due to neuropathy, the damage to muscles will likely be permanent.

How much treatment will the nerves require to heal?  This will depend on the degree of nerve damage and what types of fibers are damaged. By evaluating these areas, we will be able to uncover your individual approach back to health and healing.

There are three Components of your body that we will evaluate:

    • Structure Component – Your Spine
    • Neurological Component – Your Nervous System
    • Metabolic Component – Your Metabolic Health

Our proprietary and comprehensive treatment program utilizes state-of-the-art technologies and is unlike any treatment program you may have already experienced. No surgery.  No addictive medications.

Our exclusive treatment system increases blood flow to the nerves in the feet and/or hands, which helps to rejuvenate nerves naturally and has returned many of our patient’s feet and/or hands to normal.

The treatment we provide has a few main goals…

    • Optimize the environment within the body for nerve healing
    • Increase blood flow to the nerves
    • Stimulate the nerves that are damaged (small fiber, large diameter, or motor nerves) to reduce pain and improve balance
    • Decrease brain-based pain

The Four Vital Components of Our Neuropathy Protocol:

Each component holds equal importance and plays an integral role in healing

    • Electromagnetic Infrared Therapy – One of the treatment technologies we use to increase blood flow and repair the nerve is our new Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT). The light therapy signals Vascular Endothelial Growth (VEGF), which signals the production of Angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the creation of new blood vessels, which is needed to repair nerve damage. These blood vessels grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. This technology has 21 peer-reviewed studies with a 97% success rate with peripheral Neuropathy.
    1. Electrostimulation – We use state of the art digital electro therapeutic stimulation to assist in the growth of the nerves called Nerve Re-Education. This is used by the Cancer Centers of America in order to help those going through Chemotherapy rebuild their nerves. Nerve Re-Education can even be done at home, so therapy can be done daily! This can help with both pain relief and restoration of normal sensation.
    1. Advanced Nutrition Therapy – Proper nutrition is vital for optimal tissue and nerve repair. Our Advanced Nutritional Therapies have been designed to accelerate the healing process by affecting the complex processes of inflammation, blood flow, and bioavailable nitric oxide.
    1. In-Clinic Visits & Online Education – In synergy with your home infrared electromagnetic & electrostimulation therapy you will visit the office as needed for our in-clinic protocol. Daily Education and reminders are sent directly to you from our app – where you can also journal, track body changes, track food and water intake, and contact our staff.

Nerve cells need two things to heal…  Activation and Fuel.  This makes the combination of the Low- Level Light Therapy & Nerve Re-education (ACTIVATION) and nutrition (FUEL) – the perfect combination for nerve regeneration!
